Gurgling (borborygmi)

Gurgling and borborygmi are the sounds which occur as food, gas  and fluid make their way through the gastrointestinal tract. Such noises are usually entirely normal but complaints of increased gurgling are common. On occasion this may reflect more worrisome disease, such as in the case of those patients with bowel obstruction or maldigestion, however these problems can usually be excluded at a relatively early stage of investigation.
