Biologicals are a group of different compounds which have been synthesised, often from or resembling specific proteins found within living organisms. They are usually targeted at specific biological processes. In the UK their use is generally restricted to patients with moderate to severe inflammatory bowel disease. This is in part because of their potential side-effects, in part because of their considerable cost (often thousands of pounds per year.
